Transcript: Today’s #STEMsigns are element, periodic table, nucleus, proton, neutron, electron, neutral, charge, and property! An element is a set of atoms that share specific physical properties. Dmitri Mendeleev, a chemist, began collecting and sorting elements according to their properties. Dmitri noticed there were groups of elements that exhibit similar patterns. Over the years, after playing his own “game”, he was able to organize it into something that will eventually evolve into a rows and columns arrangement of the chemical elements also known as the periodic table of elements. The periodic table is organized by atomic number, which indicates the number of protons in the nucleus. Included in the periodic table are several other pieces of information such as the element name, symbol and their atomic mass. Atomic mass is the average mass of protons and neutrons in the nucleus of the element. The number of electrons is not specifically shown in the periodic table. An element with a neutral charge will have the same number of protons and electrons. There are two different ways to sign “electron”. The sign depicting a singular electron is a sign used for the concept of electrons. The sign depicting an electron orbiting an atom can either be used as a sign or as a descriptive term to describe an atomic structure and the movement of electrons around the atom.
