ASL Signs – states of matter, solid, liquid, gas

Today’s #STEMsigns are state, matter, solid, liquid, gas, melting, freezing, evaporation, condensation, sublimation, and deposition!

*Signs shown on #STEMsigns are seen and used by the community and are not created by Atomic Hands. We encourage you to evaluate the sign and adopt or discard it; or develop a new sign!

[Video Description: Barbara, a white woman wearing a maroon long-sleeve shirt, is standing in the foreground. In the background are three plants. On the left is a white bookshelf with various books and trinkets. On the right is a framed art by Nancy Rourke “The Deaf Mind”.]

Transcript: Today’s #STEMsigns are state, matter, solid, liquid, gas, melting, freezing, evaporation, condensation, sublimation, and deposition! Matter is a concept to describe everything that makes up the “stuff” in the universe — anything that takes up space and has mass. All matter is made up of atoms. They come together to form molecules and are held together by energy. There are four states of matter that are naturally occurring: Solids, liquids, gases, and plasma (we have not seen a sign for plasma yet). In a solid, particles are packed tightly together so they don’t move much. Solids have a definite shape, as well as mass and volume. In a liquid, the particles are more loosely packed than in a solid and are able to flow around each other, giving the liquid an indefinite shape. Therefore, the liquid will conform to the shape of its container. In a gas, the particles have a great deal of space between them.A gas has no definite shape or volume. Adding or removing energy (in form of temperature and pressure) from matter causes a physical change as matter moves from one state to another. Melting: The transition from the solid to the liquid phase Freezing: The transition from the liquid phase to the solid phase Evaporation: The transition from the liquid phase to the gas phase Condensation:The transition from the gas phase to the liquid phase Sublimination: The transition from the solid phase to the gas phase Deposition: The transition from the gas phase to the solid phase
