Ph.D Defense for Amie F. Sankoh

Project summary: Plasmodesmata (PD) are plasma membrane-lined pores in plant cell walls that allow trafficking of small molecules and macromolecules, including metabolites, signaling molecules, and some hormones, from one plant cell to another. Interestingly, the plant hormone salicylic acid (SA) does not traffic via PD, but instead moves through the apoplast, but it can function […]
Franly Ulerio-Nunez

I’m Afro-Latino, a biochemist, and an activist. My 10+ years of experience in team leadership at different organizations took place from community to employer. My leadership model was cultivated with the support of my multi-intersectional groups throughout a series of small discussions. I made several accomplishments in the laboratory. I trained staff and faculty in the culture of laboratory safety at the academic institution for 3 years. I won a runner-up award for the NAD Youth Ambassador Program in July 2018. My idea focuses on delivering STEM materials to non-STEM audiences via entertainment content.

I am a Professor & Senior Research Fellow at Saint Mary’s University in Halifax (http://ap.smu.ca/~lcampbel/). My research team has many projects on the go, most of which focuses on two main themes – persistent impact of century-old abandoned historical contaminated gold-mine sites and invasive freshwater species on freshwater ecosystems. As a Deaf academic, I also have found myself investing time and labour on unplanned (but rewarding) research on dynamic collaborative approaches for inclusion of Deaf and Hearing participants in research, teaching, as well as collaborative ASL-English scientific and academic interpreting.
