Transcript: How many drops of blood can fit on a penny? This is such an easy and fun spooky science experiment! All you need is pennies, droppers, and some homemade blood. To make your blood, just mix together some water and red food coloring. I start by showing my students what one drop of blood looks like. Then they write down their predictions. How many drops do you think will fit? Let’s find out. 1, 2, 3, 4… 26, 27, 28… You may think that because a penny is so small, it could only hold a few drops of blood. However, thanks to surface tension, adhesion and cohesion, pennies can hold dozens of drops. My students completed the experiment three times, and then I played a little trick on them. For the fourth round of the experiment, I gave them a new jar of blood, but they didn’t know this new blood had dish soap mixed in. Soap decreases the surface tension of water and makes it slide off the penny more easily, which means my students couldn’t fit as many drops. Now you know.
