Transcript: Guion Bluford Jr., a Philadelphian, graduated from Pennsylvania State University in 1964 with a degree in aerospace engineering, as well as being a member of the US Air Force ROTC (Reserve Officers Training Program). He received pilot training at Williams Air Force Base in Arizona, followed by 144 combat mission flights during the Vietnam War, which won him several medals for his service. After the war, Bluford enrolled at the Air Force Institute of Technology, where he received both a master’s (in 1974) and a PhD (1978) in aerospace engineering. He was one of some 10,000 applicants to NASA’s space program and in January 1978, he was one of the 35 people chosen to join the new NASA Astronaut Group 8. From 1983 to 1992, he made 4 trips to space as a mission specialist, riding on both Space Shuttles Challenger and Discovery. He was inducted in several halls of fame: the International Space Hall of Fame in 1997, United States Astronaut Hall of Fame in 2010, and the National Aviation Hall of Fame in 2019.
