Transcript: This week’s #STEMsigns is… STEM! What does the sign look like, exactly? (Here’s how to move your fingers.) STEM. S-T-E-M is an acronym for Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics. The sign STEM was originated in Europe. How did the sign came into existence? Well, Tamara Hoyos from Spain attended a STEM workshop for Deaf STEMists and was inspired by the exchange of ideas, connections with fellow STEMists, and interdisciplinary collaborations. She played with the idea and came up with the sign, STEM. She proposed the sign and the Europeans have adopted it. Alicia and I went to the Deaf Academic Conference in Copenhagen, Denmark in 2016. We fell in love with the sign and began using it. We also saw the sign popping up all over the US! So, STEM! You can use the sign in different contexts like STEM topics, STEM education, STEMists!
