Week 3 – Use reuseable bags

Today is the Week 3 of #opttoact challenge! Watch the video about ditching plastic bags and opting for re-useable bags! #opttoact #rei

Transcript: What will we do for week 3?? Go bagless and carry reusable bags for all shopping! Did you know that the amount of petroleum used to make a plastic bag would drive a car about 377 feet. It would take only 14 plastic bags to drive one mile! What about using paper bags? Paper bags may be biodegradable and easy to recycle or compost. But producing them in quantity requires four times as much water as plastic. Plastic bags can take up to 1,000 years to break down in a landfill and when they escape into the natural environment can have devastating effects on wildlife. As a result of their collective impact, many states have banned plastic bags. My state, Oregon just banned them this past January 1. This week, make a mental note to grab your reusable bags before you head to the store to shop for food, clothing or things. I tend to put a small bag in my purse in case I forgot to bring the bags. If you want to learn more about the impact plastic debris have on our environment, take a look at our older “Washed Ashore” video.
